Detective Agency Dortmund | Particular Features of Investigations in Dortmund

For research and surveillance to succeed, it is always advantageous for a detective to be familiar with the respective environment and its particular characteristics. These include knowledge of local transport routes, awareness of social structures, of hotspots and much more. One distinctive feature of investigations conducted by detectives in Dortmund is the city’s multicultural character and the way its residents deal with immigration and integration.

Home to Many Cultures

614,495 people (December 2024) live in Dortmund across approximately 280 km² in a vibrant metropolis with a diverse mixture of many different nationalities. In the 1970s, the foreign population consisted predominantly of Italians, Turks, Greeks and (former) Yugoslavs, accounting for a total share of around 5 per cent of the approximately 630,000 inhabitants at that time. In the new millennium, the number of foreign nationals has risen to over 130,000 people (15 per cent) (2023); additional nationalities have been added and the proportions of the individual nationalities have changed. In 2014, 28 per cent of foreign residents were Turkish, 10 per cent Polish, 5 per cent Greek, 4 per cent each Italian, Ukrainian and Russian, 3 per cent each Spanish, Portuguese, Romanian and Bulgarian, and 2 per cent British. The remaining 37 per cent comprises immigrants from the Netherlands, the USA, Scandinavia and Eastern Europe as well as from the continents of Africa, Asia and South America.

With so many different cultural backgrounds, there is naturally also potential for conflict, as not only our Kurtz Investigations Dortmund have observed, but as Germany as a whole has experienced at the latest since the refugee influx of 2015.

Under the motto “Refugees Welcome”, countless residents of Dortmund welcomed refugees with open arms in 2015 at the main railway station, at the Westfalenstadion (Signal Iduna Park) and elsewhere. They clearly stood up to right-wing minorities.

Multiculturalism as an Opportunity for Learning and Understanding

In addition to its multicultural population, Dortmund is closely interconnected internationally with Europe and the world – through numerous projects and networks as well as seven twin-city partnerships, for example with Leeds (England), Buffalo (USA) and also Xi’an in China. Commitment in the field of development aid and “One World” policy is highly valued in Dortmund. The city is active in many areas, including fair trade, the fight against exploitative child labour, sustainable education and a climate partnership with Kumasi in Ghana.

In addition, Dortmund offers a wide range of schools with differentiated focuses and an excellent standard of education. The adult education centre also provides numerous instructive courses, as do the various further education institutions in Dortmund. Immigrants from Eastern European and Asian countries in particular make use of these training opportunities, as qualifications obtained in their respective home countries are often not fully recognised in Germany. Moreover, in addition to the university libraries, the City and State Library provides an excellently equipped municipal library offering approximately one million media items. Unfortunately, alongside all the positive aspects Dortmund has to offer, crime is also on the rise, which means that the investigators of the Kurtz Detective Agency Dortmund are continuously called upon to act.
